In 1964, nearly half of the U.S. population tuned into The Ed Sullivan Show as the British pop group, The Beatles, invaded our shores with a new look, feel and sound. The marriage of music and TV was born on that day, but it took almost 20 years to became fully realized. In 1980, MTV debuted. And for years, MTV really was Music Television.
As MTV became more about pop culture and less about the music, popular TV culture caught up and surpassed the network, fully realizing the impact of music on television viewers. In the 90s, TV producers discovered that a well-placed song could have just as much impact on the emotive quality of a TV show as it does in the movies. And so, popular music became a lot more popular on network TV. Today, TV shows come with their own soundtracks. |
